What Happens in Therapy?
Starting therapy can feel daunting, especially if it’s your first time. This page is designed to help you understand what to expect from therapy and what working with me as your therapist may look like, from your initial enquiry through to ongoing sessions.
Introductory Call: Your First Step into Therapy
Before beginning therapy, I offer an introductory call with all potential clients. This call provides an opportunity to ask questions, understand the therapy process, and ensure the therapy I offer feels like the right fit for you.
During this call, we will talk through:
Confidentiality in therapy: I will explain what remains confidential between us and the limited circumstances in which I may need to involve another party, so you can feel clear and safe about what you choose to share.
Medications: I will ask whether you are taking any medications so that I can work with you in the safest way possible.
Medical history: We will briefly discuss any relevant medical history to ensure our sessions are safe and appropriate. For example, if you have asthma, I may advise you to bring your inhaler to sessions.
What has brought you to therapy: This helps me understand what you are seeking support with. You are welcome to share only what feels comfortable for you.
Any questions: You may have questions about the therapy process, my approach, or practical details. You are welcome to ask anything, and we can cover these at any point during the call.
If you decide you would like to proceed with therapy after the call, we will agree on a suitable date, time, and frequency for your sessions. I will also send you a therapy contract to review.
Your First Therapy Session
Your first therapy session provides a space to settle in and begin our work together. We will briefly revisit the topics discussed in the introductory call in case anything has changed, and we will review the therapy contract in case you have any questions.
At the beginning of therapy, you may choose to set an intention. This is optional, but some clients find it helpful to identify what they would like therapy to support them with, such as building confidence, managing anxiety, or preparing for a specific life event.
Ongoing Therapy Sessions
In ongoing sessions, we will explore whatever feels most important to you. Therapy is led by your needs, and sessions may evolve over time.
If you have a particular intention, this may form a consistent thread throughout therapy. If there are several areas you would like to explore, sessions may feel scattered initially. This is a normal part of the therapy process. Over time, patterns and connections often begin to emerge, bringing greater clarity and understanding.
Ending Therapy
Therapy can come to an end for many reasons. You may feel you have achieved your goals, or you may wish to pause therapy to reflect and integrate what you have learned.
When the time feels right, we will work together to bring therapy to a safe ending. Where possible, I ask for notice so that we can ensure a supportive and contained ending to our work.
What Happens After Therapy
The impact of therapy varies for each person. Many clients notice changes in how they relate to themselves, the people in their lives, and the world around them. These shifts can support greater self-awareness, emotional resilience, and a life that feels more aligned with your values and needs.
If you would like to explore whether therapy feels right for you, or if you have any questions, you are welcome to get in touch.
